Apartment Hunting Part 4

The second property my partner went to see was a house in the woods, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, an older home with about 3 acres of space to run around. The rent was $1200 but it included all utilities, plowing, mowing, and came furnished. The listing also said cats were okay. However, there were delicate objects all over the house, my husband was worried the kids would destroy them. I figured we could just store them in the basement or eves until we moved out and ask the landlord to remove upholstered furniture so we could bring cats. We found the apartment, whoo hoo, I started sharing the pictures and getting all excited but then we got a call from the listing agent, she said that the landlord in the past had excepted pets but this time around was not ok with it because of the place being furnished. She went on to say she had even suggested the landlord remove the upholstered furniture pieces, but the landlord had refused to remove them. So, what we thought was going to work, wasn't. This was three weeks before closing.

Finding an apartment was not an easy task and it seemed to drag on forever. We were two weeks away from the closing date and we still hadn't have found anything. I wasn't sure if we were leaving next weekend or the weekend after. I hoped to be in an apartment two weekends before closing, so we could relax, instead of trying to move all in one weekend but we hadn't have found anything yet and I was wondering where we were headed. Too much unknown, and it was freaking me out, I was so worried we would be homeless.

I called my mom up and told her the situation. In the past she had offered her trailer as a place to live for a short period till we found a more permanent spot. She owns a cabin in the woods with extra land for guests. She plopped a trailer up there, and had been working to revamp it for the summer months, making it more of a glamping trailer. Anyways, I explained the situation and she told me that she could make it work for me but to try and keep looking, you may find something. I felt better, at least we weren't going to be homeless but my partner would have to live on his own till we found a house and who knows how long that would be. Also we have four cats and four cats in a small trailer with 5 litter boxes was not ideal but it was either that or nothing.

I prayed again and so did my mom and sister. The realtor had assured us that rentals would open up as soon as ski season ended but ski season had just ended and no apartments were turning up in the state we were looking to move to. I had of course ignored the apartments available in the abutting state because we wanted to live in the other state but there were more apartments in the abutting state than what we were seeing in the state we wanted to live and my husband's work was right on the state line. Also what is interesting is all the abutting state's listings for apartments said cat friendly or pet friendly, it's as if God was trying to tell me something.
So I started searching for apartments in the abutting state. The apartments were really nice and included most utilities. I started to brainstorm what was close by because I didn't know my way around the map in this new state. I came across this one apartment, it had pictures of a new kitchen, new bathroom, carpeted rooms, nicely painted, and a big kitchen. I checked out the town website to see what the town was like, it was a city, but it had a lot of kids activities in it - library programs, recreation center with a pool, I checked out the schools they looked good too, there was a preschool just around the corner from the apartment and the elementary school was just a short drive up the road. It looked like a good spot. I contacted my partner and he set up a time to meet with the landlord to see the property right away.

When he went to the property he took a video of the place so I could see what it was like. He said he loved the newness of it. However, there were a lot of boxes everywhere and it was hard to get the layout of the place because of the clutter. He also mentioned to me that there was a school bus garage across the street but didn't seem like it would be a problem. There was also a garage and a side yard with plenty of space for the kids to play, fenced in too. This apartment was $905/month, it included heat, all water, snow removal, and lawn maintenance. What a deal! After my partner talked with the landlord though he found out it was a 12 month lease not month to month but he had talked about getting in writing that we could get our deposit back if we left earlier than the 12 month cut off time. After seeing the apartment, I had still had to think about it. We were down to the wire and the one in the abutting state seemed like a dream come true, why did I have to think about it. Well first off, we were moving from the country to the city, and the idea was to move from the country to more of a rural country area, also we were moving to a state we didn't want to live in. And we were moving into a 12 month lease contract that we just weren't sure we could do, we wanted a month to month because we were going to be looking for a house to move in shortly after the apartment move.

We now had two applications for both places, the state abutting the state we wanted to live in with the apartment near the bus garage and in the city, and the state we wanted to live in, in the country, but the layout was not ideal and was on a busy road, (remember we still had that application, and that was the town we wanted to live in, but the apartment was very pricey at $1200). Decisions had to be made and we had to find out which one and fast, time was ticking....

Apartment Hunt Part 2

I had gotten my in-laws to watch our kids for the weekend while I went up to look for houses/apartments with my partner. Apartments were more important but there was this one house that was on the market that I was just aching to see and I wanted to see what the area had to offer before we moved there. My partner found a local realtor - this took time too because realtors are also hard to come by in the area and have a hard time communicating as well. My partner left numerous messages for local realtors and never got a call back. Eventually he just had to put out a mass email via the contact form on one of websites of the many popular realtors in the area and see who bit first. After much deliberation one gentleman got back to him, so my partner set up a time for us to meet during the weekend I was coming up. I got the kids off to their grandparents house and hit the road, it was a wonderful drive. Got to avoid the city completely and drove on country routes, a very easy ride up. I g...

Which One, Which One

Big decisions to make, now we had two apartment applications and the decision was in my hands. My partner made it clear we just had pick one real soon cause moving day was upon us. He liked them both for one reason or another. The one that was $1200 wanted an answer quickly, they had another couple who wanted the apartment and said we had to make a decision fast. So, a lot of pressure was added. I didn't want to live in the abutting state or be in the city but if someone else was interested in the apartment that was $1200, I didn't see the reason why we should be pushed into the apartment just because it was in our desired town, it was the wrong fit for our family and the main road with our small child was not ideal. So we chose the $905/month apartment in the city, across from the bus garage. It had the big kitchen, new look in the bathroom, new look in the kitchen, new carpeting, new fresh paint, and an extra bonus room for our son to sleep in (although technically a 2 bedroo...

Pictures are deceiving

Later that day we saw the house, in the same town I was exploring, and unfortunately pictures are deceiving. The house had a lot of character but the land layout was not what I had in mind. The house was off a main road although the road it abutted was quiet and serene. The house seemed like the perfect home for us, mudroom, first floor laundry, beautiful original woods, beams, giant living room with stone fireplace, possible in-law suite or apartment, 2 bathrooms (both downstairs and next to each other), and 4 bedrooms. However, there was a serious issue with the chimney, peeling paint, roof had to be redone and the apartment needed to be finished. The yard layout was lengthy behind the home but not really a great garden space. The updates that had been done to it were unfinished and done shoddily. My heart sunk. A house I thought was just perfect for us, wasn't in reality. This would be just the first of a long list of homes that would disappoint. After seeing the house I dropp...
